THE WALDORF SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Expanding perspectives through deeper thoughts and experience
The computational skills they’ve gained in mathematics are infused in the physics and chemistry lessons. Students are building a foundation of critical thinking that will prepare them for success in college and beyond. In our middle school education, main Lessons are sometimes taught in blocks based on one topic and usually last three to five weeks, for two to three hours a day. Block scheduling allows teachers and students to intensively focus on a particular academic area and topic. Material is prepared in various styles, and effectively incorporate into the arts. Each day, in addition to the Main Lesson, students have classes taught by specialized subject teachers culminating in a fully-rounded education that develops the whole child. The computational skills they’ve gained in mathematics are infused in the physics and chemistry lessons. Students are building a foundation of critical thinking that will prepare them for success in college and beyond.

Art,Eurythmy & Music

Art and music are interwoven throughout the curriculum in a Waldorf school in order to develop the imagination, creativity and joy in learning. After reading, the children might draw pictures of the story with bright beeswax crayons, metamorphosing newly learned letters into colorful beings. They might try experimenting with self-made music inspired by the tales, which may then become the class play that semester.

Waldorf education is about teaching all subjects creatively and artistically. The many new and often challenging ideas put before students are presented in an imaginative, rhythmic, and always cheerful way. This will emotionally engage the student and facilitate learning.

Arts

The curriculum also gives time for instruction in specific art skills, some unique only the Steiner system. Beeswax modeling, Waldorf form drawing, watercolors and various needlework arts (both boys and girls) are offered throughout the weekly schedule.

Eurythmy

Music specialists teach the students once or twice a week throughout the grades, concentrating on string and wind instruments in addition to singing. The International House of Waldorf-Steiner students will be able to study with a lyre and wind flutes with a trained instructor. In the upper grades the music teachers introduce music theory and musical notation.
